Volkswagen E-Bugster Steedster concept car

Volkswagen has revealed the first images and details of the new E-Bugster concept car that is being showcased at Auto China in Beijing. It’s an updated, roofless version of the model that was shown earlier this year in Detroit

The name is derived from the American nickname for the Beetle, ‘Bug’ and the ‘speedster’ body style and is considered to be a pre-production preview of the new Beetle Convertible.

Power is generated from an electric motor that produces 85kW and 114hp, enabling the speedster to accelerate from 0-100k/h (0-62mph) in 10.8 seconds.

The lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 28.3 kWh and can be recharged by standard or ultra-fast DC charging. It also makes use of a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) similar to the Gran Tourismo system in the Porsche 911 GT to recharge as well.

The E-Bugster is 90mm lower and 30mm longer than the production Beetle coupe, giving it a more sporty look. The design maintains the Beetle DNA and comes with LED headlights. Additionally, the C-shape you see either side of the central air intake features a line of LED daytime running lights as well.

Following the E-Bugster concept’s unveiling, expect to see the Beetle Convertible shown in production form later this year in either Paris or Los Angeles before sales begin early in 2013.

eBay Launches Green Driving Site

eBay, the online auction site, has launched an eco-centric Green Driving website for green and alternative automotive enthusiasts.  The site is dedicated entirely to alternative fuels for car enthusiasts and potential buyers.  Links for various car types go to the eBay Motors site, of course.

The site features a lot of information on alternatives along with ways to buy them.  Individual listings for vehicles pull information from the Environmental Protection Agency’s fueleconomy.gov site to show the vehicle’s miles per gallon (equivalent) numbers, estimated annual costs, and environmental impact.

TrueCar Inc, an online automotive information platform, has released a study that concludes that the extra money spent for premium fuel economy options, such as those offered on the Chevrolet Cruze ECO, are a waste of resources.

The 2012 Cruze ECO has an $850 price premium over its non-ECO counterpart and returns only a 0.3mpg fuel economy boost.  At today’s gasoline prices, it would take 48 years for the price difference to be made up at a standard 12,000 miles per year.  DOH!

Other cars, like the Ford Fiesta SE with SFE fared no better.  This “Super Fuel Economy” option has about the same boost as the ECO (0.3mpg) at a price premium of $600, though you do get some other aesthetic upgrades for that extra cash layout.

On the other side of the equation, however, the Mazda3 Touring with SkyActiv is actually cheaper than it’s non-SkyActiv counterpart, providing obvious value for the upgrade.  The Chevrolet Sonic has a smaller price premium than the Cruze for its ECO option and takes only 3 years to give payback.

Even the Ford F-150 pickup with EcoBoost has less than five years to pay back its price premium at current gasoline costs.  That’s not bad for a pickup that gets several miles per gallon better in the bargain.

Lesson learned: marketing terms like “ECO” and “fuel efficient” aren’t necessarily truth.  Look before you leap.

Daihatsu Kei Concept Promoting Hydrazine As Future Fuel

Daihatsu has been selling its super-compact Kei class vehicles in Japan for some years, but has had limited success moving into other markets with them.  The small Japanese automaker, which is partly owned by Toyota, was also badly hit by both the earthquake and nuclear meltdown that followed it.

Not to be dissuaded, however, the company has presented a new Kei class concept called the shoCase as a vehicle to promote what Daihatsu sees as the future of automotive fuels: hydrazine.

The shoCase is a fuel cell vehicle using hydrazine rather than pure hydrogen (H2), which eliminates many of the problems associated with straight H2 fuel cells (HFCs).

Conventional fuel cells use combustible hydrogen, highly acidic electrolyte membranes, high-cost platinum catalysts, etc.  Daihatsu was reversed the process and is using an alkaline (non-acidic) anion exchange fuel cell which eliminates the acidic problem and with it, the need for platinum as a catalyst – replacing it with several options in inexpensive metals like cobalt or nickel.

daihatsuconcepts 54 Daihatsu Kei Concept Promoting Hydrazine As Future FuelThe fuel is hydrazine hydrate (hydrogen and nitrogen mixed), Daihatsu was able to achieve an output density of 0.50W/cm2, which is comparable to a normal hydrogen fuel cell while still emitting only water with the addition of nitrogen – neither of which is polluting.

Hydrazine hydrate, as the name suggests, is a liquid fuel, making it easier to handle for filling and storage.  No compression is required for its high energy density to be used.  While it is poisonous, it is not any more so than gasoline in handling.

Despite this, Daihatsu has gone a step further and developed a polymer that “fixes” to the fuel while in the tank, preventing spills should the fuel tank be ruptured, without hindering fuel delivery to the cells.

While the concept car is probably a fleeting design fantasy, the fuel cell technology is very real and has the possibility of fundamentally changing future fuel cell research and development in a big way.
